A Promise Ignites a Passion
In the late 1990s, during a family trip to Mazamitla, Barajas’s father expressed a desire to have a tequila bearing his name. What began as a gesture to honor her father’s wish evolved into a profound passion for tequila-making. Initially aiming to produce a limited batch, she delved deep into the industry, learning from seasoned distillers and navigating a landscape where women were scarce.
Establishing Vinos y Licores Azteca
By 1999, Barajas had founded Vinos y Licores Azteca in Valle de Guadalupe, Jalisco. Her distillery, Raza Azteca, became a testament to traditional tequila production methods. Utilizing masonry ovens made from local red soil, the agave is slow-cooked for 24 hours, followed by a natural fermentation process lasting up to a week. This meticulous approach ensures a tequila that resonates with authenticity and depth.
Championing Female Empowerment
A defining feature of Barajas’s enterprise is its all-female workforce. From agave fields to bottling lines, women occupy roles traditionally held by men. This shift wasn’t initially intentional; when job postings attracted only female applicants, Barajas embraced the opportunity to empower local women, many of whom sought employment due to male migration to the U.S.
Crafting Renowned Tequilas
Under her leadership, Vinos y Licores Azteca produces several acclaimed brands, including Leyenda de México and La Gritona. These tequilas are celebrated for their artisanal quality and cultural significance. Notably, the Leyenda de México line features special editions adorned with Wixárika beadwork, honoring indigenous artistry.
Overcoming Industry Challenges
